Why Transmission Fluid Matters
Transmission fluid serves as both lubricant and hydraulic fluid. Over time, heat and friction break down the fluid's additive package, reducing its ability to protect clutch packs, gears, and valve bodies. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a red flag. Fresh ATF should be translucent red or pink; when it turns brown or black, it's overdue for a change.
Lifetime Fluid — Fact or Marketing?
Many automakers claim "lifetime" transmission fluid. This is widely criticized by transmission specialists. "Lifetime" typically means the fluid will last as long as the transmission does — which may only be 100,000–150,000 miles in demanding conditions. Proactive fluid changes at 60,000–80,000 miles are cheap insurance against a $3,000–$5,000 transmission rebuild.
CVT Transmissions Are Especially Sensitive
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) fluid degrades faster than standard ATF because the belt/pulley system generates significant heat and metal particles. Using non-CVT fluid in a CVT will destroy it. Always use the exact fluid spec listed in your owner's manual — many CVTs require proprietary OEM fluid (e.g., Nissan NS-3, Toyota TC, Honda HMMF).
