⚠️ What Travel Insurance Does NOT Cover

  • Pre-existing medical conditions β€” unless you purchase a waiver at time of booking
  • Known events β€” if a hurricane is already named or a pandemic already declared, cancellation may not be covered
  • War, civil unrest, terrorism β€” most standard policies exclude these (specialist policies available)
  • Extreme/prohibited sports β€” e.g. free solo climbing, base jumping β€” without a specific rider
  • Traveling against government advice β€” if your government issues a "Do Not Travel" warning for your destination
  • Intoxication-related incidents β€” accidents while under influence of alcohol or drugs are typically excluded
  • Valuables left unattended β€” leaving bags/camera/passport unsupervised in public places is often excluded
  • Illegal activities of any kind

Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?

Medical emergencies abroad can be extremely expensive. A helicopter evacuation from a remote hiking trail can cost $50,000–$200,000. Hospitalization in the US for a foreign visitor averages $10,000+ per day. Most domestic health insurance provides no or very limited coverage outside your home country.

Trip cancellation protection is especially valuable for trips booked months in advance with non-refundable components. Typical reimbursement covers: illness, injury, death of family member, jury duty, job loss, severe weather, and carrier bankruptcy.

Medical evacuation is often the most critical coverage. Even if you receive treatment locally, repatriation to your home country can be prohibitively expensive without insurance.
