Big 3 vs MVNOs: What's the Real Difference?
Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile own their own nationwide networks and offer the most consistent coverage, especially in rural areas. MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) like Mint Mobile, Visible, Cricket, and Metro lease capacity on those same networks at lower prices โ often with some trade-offs in congestion priority, customer service, and roaming.
When MVNOs Make Sense
If you live in a city or suburban area and primarily use your phone on Wi-Fi, an MVNO can save you $40โ$80/month per line with virtually identical day-to-day performance. The main downside is deprioritization: during network congestion, MVNO customers may experience slower speeds than postpaid customers on the same towers.
Understanding Autopay Discounts
Most carriers require autopay (and sometimes a compatible credit/debit card) to receive their advertised price. Without autopay, expect to pay $5โ$10 more per line per month. Prices shown here reflect the autopay discount where applicable.
What "Unlimited" Actually Means
No carrier truly offers unlimited data at full speed forever. Most unlimited plans include a premium data threshold (e.g., 50โ100GB) after which speeds may be reduced during congestion. Hotspot data is almost always capped separately, even on "unlimited" plans.
