How Warehouse Space Is Calculated

Raw pallet footprint is just the starting point. Real warehouse space needs account for pick aisles, cross aisles, receiving docks, staging areas, and office space. The standard rule of thumb is to multiply raw storage area by 2.5ร— to account for aisles, then add receiving and office percentages on top.

Tall warehouses can reduce floor space through vertical racking โ€” a 30-foot clear height can stack 5โ€“6 pallets high, dramatically reducing square footage needs compared to floor stacking.

Vertical storage

High-bay racking can reduce floor footprint by 4โ€“6ร— compared to single-layer floor stacking. Factor in clear ceiling height when planning.

Slotting optimization

Put fast-moving SKUs near the shipping area to reduce picker travel time. This effectively increases throughput without adding space.

Safety stock buffer

Always plan for 20โ€“30% more space than your current inventory. Seasonal peaks and replenishment orders need staging room.

Lease in round numbers

Warehouse space is usually available in 5,000โ€“10,000 sq ft increments. Round your requirement up to the nearest available unit.
