💧 Water Purification Guide

Compare purification methods for camping, survival, and travel. Understand what each method removes, its limitations, and when to combine methods.

Purification Methods

🔥 Boiling

No equipment neededFuel required
Kills 100% of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoa) when done correctly. Does NOT remove chemicals, heavy metals, or sediment.
✅ Most reliable method. Free (needs only fuel). No filter lifespan limits.
❌ Slow. Uses fuel. Doesn't improve taste. Need to wait for water to cool. Ineffective against chemicals.

💊 Iodine / Chlorine Tablets

LightweightChemical
Kills bacteria and viruses. INEFFECTIVE against Cryptosporidium (protozoa). Wait time: 30 min (4h for Crypto).
✅ Ultralight and cheap. Great emergency backup. Long shelf life.
❌ Doesn't kill Crypto alone. Affects taste. Not suitable for pregnant women (iodine). Slower in cold water.

🔬 UV SteriPen

ElectronicBattery needed
Inactivates 99.9999% of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa incl. Crypto. Requires clear water (turbid water blocks UV).
✅ Fast (90 seconds per litre). Lightweight. Effective against everything including viruses.
❌ Needs batteries/charging. Doesn't work in turbid water. No physical barrier. Fragile.

⚗️ Hollow Fibre Filter (e.g. Sawyer Squeeze)

No chemicalsField-maintainable
Removes bacteria and protozoa (incl. Crypto). DOES NOT remove viruses. 0.1 micron absolute.
✅ No taste impact. Long lifespan (up to 100,000 gallons). Backflushable. Lightweight.
❌ Cannot freeze (destroys filter). Doesn't remove viruses — combine with tablets for high-risk areas.

🏔️ Gravity / Pump Filter (e.g. MSR)

Group useHigh flow rate
Removes bacteria, protozoa, and some viruses (depends on model). Good for groups and base camps.
✅ High volume output. Suitable for groups. Better models remove viruses. Improves taste.
❌ Heavier and bulkier. Cartridges need replacement. Not ideal for solo backpacking.

🧪 Ceramic Filter

Long lifespanCleaning needed
Removes bacteria, protozoa, sediment. Does NOT remove viruses or chemicals. Sub-micron (0.2–0.5 micron).
✅ Very long lifespan (cleanable). Effective against bacteria and Crypto. Good flow rate.
❌ Fragile (can crack if dropped or frozen). Doesn't remove viruses — combine with UV or tablets in risky water.

🌍 When viruses matter: In developed countries with intact wilderness (North America, Europe, Australasia), virus contamination of backcountry water is rare — hollow fibre filters alone are usually sufficient. In developing countries or areas with high human/animal activity, treat for viruses too (boiling, UV, or chemical treatment).
🪨 Turbid water pre-treatment: If water is murky, filter through a bandana or coffee filter first to remove large particles. This extends the life of your filter and improves the effectiveness of chemical and UV treatments, which are less effective in turbid water.
