About Yarn Weight Categories

Yarn weight refers to the thickness of the yarn strand, not its actual mass. The Craft Yarn Council has standardized categories from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo). Wraps per inch (WPI) is a practical way to measure weight: wrap yarn around a ruler for 1 inch and count the strands.

When substituting yarn weights, gauge swatching is critical. Going up a weight (e.g. DK โ†’ Worsted) will produce a looser, larger fabric with the same needle size. Always check the pattern's required gauge and adjust needle size accordingly. Heavier yarns also use more yardage per stitch, so recalculate your yardage needs when substituting.
