Yarn Yardage Estimator
Find out how much yarn you need for your project โ with a safety buffer so you don't run short.
Why Buy an Extra Skein?
Running out of yarn mid-project is one of the most frustrating knitting experiences. Yardage estimates in patterns assume perfect tension and no mistakes. In reality, swatching, frogging (ripping back), and slightly different gauge all consume extra yarn. The 10โ15% buffer accounts for this.
Leftover yarn is never truly wasted โ it becomes stash for small accessories, colorwork accents, or swatching for your next project.
Dye Lots: Why They Matter
Yarn is dyed in batches called dye lots. Even the same colorway from the same brand can look subtly different between lots, especially in natural or hand-dyed yarns. Always buy enough yarn from the same dye lot to complete your project. Check the label for the dye lot number and buy a little extra โ it's nearly impossible to find a matching lot later.
If you do end up with different dye lots, alternate skeins every two rows to blend the color shift so it's invisible in the finished fabric.
