Choosing the Right Zipper Type
Invisible zippers are installed before the seam is sewn and are hidden inside the seam allowance โ the pull is the only visible part. They are the standard choice for dresses and skirts sewn from medium-weight fabrics. Use an invisible zipper foot for best results. They should be at least 1 inch longer than the opening.
Regular (coil or metal) zippers are the most versatile. The metal teeth or nylon coil are exposed. They work in bags, pants, cushion covers, and anywhere the zipper hardware can be decorative. Measure the zipper by the length of the zipper tape from stop to stop, not including the pull tab.
Sport or water-resistant zippers have a nylon coil covered by a flap and are used in outdoor gear, bags, and jackets. Separating zippers open completely at the bottom and are used for jackets, cardigans, and sleeping bags where the two halves must come apart entirely.
Sizing Rule of Thumb
Choose the next standard zipper size up from your opening measurement. For example, a 6-inch opening needs a 7-inch zipper. The extra length can be cut off after installation. For invisible zippers, buy at least 1โ2 inches longer than the opening so there is enough pull room at the top. For separating zippers on jackets, the zipper length should equal the full front opening, so measure carefully before purchasing.
